The information technology sector jumped 1.69% at midday Wednesday. This followed gains on Wall Street overnight in response to the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.

Archer Materials (ASX:AXE) said it was granted a US patent for its biochip project, representing the design and work done on the graphene complexes and their compositions that can be used in the biochip. Its shares soared past 9% in recent trading.

On the flip side, the materials sector struggled, falling 0.83%. This came after US President Donald Trump said officials were considering a 10% tariff on China. Australian iron ore exporters are reliant on Chinese sales.

Amcor (ASX:AMC) along with Berry Global Group has recommended that shareholders approve the issue of shares for Amcor to acquire the rival plastics packaging company via an all-stock deal, at an extraordinary general meeting to be held on Feb. 25.
