US Commerce Secretary nominee Howard Lutnick wants to stop China from using American technology, promising tariffs across the board, the South China Morning Post reported Thursday.
Lutnick said he aims for reciprocity toward his approach with China, including more restrictions on chip sales, open-source AI models, and the hosting of US-made AI models on Chinese servers, the report said.
Lutnick's comments come after Chinese AI startup DeepSeek's rise, about which he said it took US intellectual property, the report said.
