Tulsi Gabbard Can't Afford Many GOP Defections

Sens. Susan Collins and Todd Young, who both serve on the Intelligence Committee, are among the Republicans who have yet to say whether they will support Tulsi Gabbard. Only one Republican would need to oppose her to block her nomination from being reported favorably to the full Senate, assuming all Democrats oppose her. In the full Senate, Republicans have a 53-47 majority, meaning they can afford no more than three GOP defections if all Democrats are opposed.

Collins said Wednesday she won't decide whether she will vote for Gabbard's confirmation until after Thursday's hearing. She told reporters she planned to follow up on a "lively" meeting in her office last December, which included a discussion about Gabbard's past comments and legislation supporting Edward Snowden.
