Day Before Collision, Another Plane Aborted First Landing at Reagan to Avoid Helicopter

On Tuesday, a day before Wednesday's fatal collision, a Republic Airways jet from Windsor Locks, Conn., was minutes away from landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport before it aborted its landing to avoid a helicopter in its way.

"What was the reason for the go-around?" asked air-traffic control, according to recordings from LiveATC.net that were viewed by The Wall Street Journal.

"We had an RA with the helicopter traffic below us," the pilot replied, referring to a so-called resolution advisory that warns about a possible collision with another aircraft.

The Embraer ERJ 175 then made a right turn and briefly circled over Fairfax County, Va., before landing safely at Reagan about 10 minutes later.
