Latham adds liability management leader from Wachtell

By Sara Merken

Feb 3 (Reuters) - Latham & Watkins has hired former Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz partner John Sobolewski as global chair of liability management, the firm said on Monday.

Sobolewski, who represents sponsors and corporate borrowers in financing and liability management deals, joins Latham's capital markets and finance practices as a New York-based partner.

His clients have included Carlyle Group, Warburg Pincus, Lumen Technologies, Mallinckrodt, T-Mobile and Gap, according to his Latham online biography.

Sobolewski said liability management has been a busy part of his practice as clients look for "creative" capital solutions.

Marc Jaffe, managing partner of Latham's New York office, said Sobolewski's work intersects with several of the firm's practice areas, including bank finance, hybrid capital, private equity and restructuring.

Los Angles-founded Latham, which has more than 3,500 lawyers globally, has expanded its restructuring capabilities with recent high-profile hires. The firm in November brought on a team from Weil, Gotshal & Manges, including prominent partner Ray Schrock as global chair of its restructuring and special situations practice. Andrew Parlen also joined as head of U.S. restructuring from Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

Sobolewski's departure marks a rare exit from Wachtell, where he had practiced since 2012.

Wachtell said the firm wishes him well.

Latham on Monday also hired Paul Rosen, who most recently oversaw the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States as assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Treasury for investment security.
