CAD Strengthens on Volatile Day, But Trade Uncertainty Poses Headwind -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
04 Feb

1844 ET - The Canadian dollar gains about a cent against USD in late afternoon trading, following news of a 30-day reprieve from a 25% US tariff. USDCAD sits at C$1.4401, or below a peak of C$1.4788 less than 24 hours earlier. TD Securities, though, is sticking with its call that USDCAD reaches C$1.50 in 1Q, citing a "relatively weak" macroeconomic backdrop and heightened trade uncertainty. The 25% U.S. tariff has been delayed, but firm argues the dips "will be brief and shallow." (paul.vieira@wsj.com; @paulvieira)
