WASHINGTON-Several members of Congress have asked the Pentagon to maintain a "continued operational pause" of helicopter training around from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport following the deadly crash Wednesday night between the UH-60 Black Hawk and a commercial jet.
The 11 lawmakers, all Democrats who represent districts near Reagan National, asked for the continued pause or a "redirection of training." They also asked for a safety review of future military operations there. "We are deeply concerned about this tragic collision and its broader ramifications" for the area, the letter, to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, read in part. "We have long warned that this airspace, and particularly the area immediately surrounding National, is overcrowded and above recommended capacity." There was no immediate response from the Pentagon.
Earlier Friday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said helicopter traffic around the airport would be restricted, with some exceptions, until the National Transportation Safety Board completes its preliminary investigation into the crash.
