General Motors has dropped a production shift at an assembly plant that builds electric crossovers for Chevrolet, Cadillac and Honda in Mexico.

GM’s Ramos Arizpe Assembly plant returned to two daily shifts in January after increasing to three last May, a spokesperson told Automotive News in a statement.

The plant builds the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV and the Cadillac Optiq, as well as the Honda Prologue that’s built on GM’s electric-vehicle architecture. The plant also builds gasoline-powered Chevy Blazers.

“In early 2025, we changed the plant’s production schedule to increase efficiency following the decision by Honda to reduce Prologue volumes, and an adjustment in the mix of production of GM vehicles at the site,” the GM statement said. “The company is working with impacted employees and stakeholders to ensure an orderly transition.”

A person with knowledge of the matter said ending the third shift resulted in the elimination of about 800 jobs.

Honda did not confirm production changes for the Prologue, which went on sale in March 2024. In a statement, a spokesperson said: “It is quite normal to our business to make production adjustments during the year in order to meet customer needs and market conditions. We will continue to carefully manage production and inventory for our entire product lineup to meet anticipated demand in 2025.”

Ramos Arizpe Assembly built more than 350,000 vehicles in 2024, with the Prologue accounting for 46,505, according to the Automotive News Research & Data Center. Monthly production averaged about 25,000 vehicles from January through May and 32,300 after the third shift started.
