U.S. STOCKS END WEEK ON DOWN NOTE AS TARIFF WORRY WEIGHS
Wall Street closed lower to end the trading week on Friday, as early gains powered by an advance in Apple AAPL.O and an in-line report on inflation were short-circuited later in the day after the White House said tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico would take effect on Saturday.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said tariffs of 25% on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on Chinese goods will be implemented with immediate effect, countering an earlier report from Reuters that tariffs would be delayed until March and with some limited exceptions.
Energy .SPNY led sectors decliners on the day, following earnings from Exxon Mobil XOM.N and Chevron CVX.N, while communication services .SPLRCL posted the biggest rise.
For the week, the S&P 500 index .SPX fell 1%, the Nasdaq .IXIC declined 1.64%, while the Dow .DJI climbed 0.27%.
For the month, the S&P 500 gained 2.7%, the Nasdaq rose 1.64%, and the Dow rallied 4.7%.
