Backlash against Labor, Greens in Victoria byelections

Major swings away from incumbent Labor and the Greens in two key state byelections in Victoria have dented Premier Jacinta Allan’s government at the state level and sounded a warning about voters’ mood for change just weeks from the likely calling of the federal election.

The result in the formerly safe Labor seat of Werribee in Melbourne’s west was too close to call on Sunday morning, with the Liberals in the running to win it for the first time since 1979.
