Origin Energy has posted a 23.6 per cent increase in profit for the first half, as earnings from its gas business more than offset weaker results from generating and selling electricity.

Underlying net profit, the figure most closely watched by the market, rose to $924 million for the six months ended December 31, from $747 million a year earlier. Origin’s bottom line edged up 2 per cent to $1 billion on sales 10 per cent higher to $8.8 billion.
