AMD Gains Microprocessor Market Share as Intel Falls to Lowest Level Since 2002

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD, Financials) increased its microprocessor market share in the latest quarter, while Intel (INTC, Financials) saw its share drop to the lowest level since 2002, according to data from Citi and Mercury Research.

With its largest increases in the laptop and server sectors, AMD's total market share climbed to 22.1%, a 53 basis point improvement over the previous quarter. While server market share also rose, the company's laptop processor share increased 102 basis points to 20.8%. Its desktop processor share dropped, however, 144 basis points to 25.3%.

Remaining the major participant, Intel suffered a 104 basis point quarter-over-quarter drop in its total market share to 67.4%. The corporation made modest improvement in the desktop market, where its share increased 166 basis points to 68.1%, but this was countered elsewhere. percentage of notebook processors dropped to 66.9%; percentage of server processors dropped to 69.8%.
