Tech giant Baidu (HKG:9888) plans to open source its upcoming Ernie 4.5 series, citing the success of AI firm DeepSeek as an influence, Reuters reported Tuesday.
In a post-earnings call Baidu Chief Executive Robin Li said the decision to open source the Ernie 4.5 series is "backed by our deep confidence in our technology leadership," according to the report.
Despite launching one of China's first ChatGPT-style chatbots in 2023, Baidu's Ernie 4.0 faced stiff competition, particularly from DeepSeek's R1 model. To boost adoption, Baidu will open source its next-gen models from June and offer free premium chatbot services starting April, Reuters wrote.
