One way to deal with stock volatility is to ensure you have a properly diverse portfolio. Of course, in an ideal world, all your stocks would beat the market. CarMax, Inc. (NYSE:KMX) has done well over the last year, with the stock price up 24% beating the market return of 24% (not including dividends). On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 13% in three years.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over the last twelve months, CarMax actually shrank its EPS by 6.3%.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.

Revenue was pretty flat year on year, but maybe a closer look at the data can explain the market optimism.

A Different Perspective

CarMax's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 24%. The silver lining is that the share price is up in the short term, which flies in the face of the annualised loss of 0.8% over the last five years. While 'turnarounds seldom turn' there are green shoots for CarMax. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that CarMax is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
