Cathay Pacific's Passenger Count Surges 37% in January

Cathay Pacific (HKG:0293) flew 2.4 million passengers in January, a 37% increase from the corresponding month a year ago.

Passenger capacity rose 31% to 11.3 billion available seat kilometers (ASK), according to a Wednesday filing with the Hong Kong bourse.

Cargo carried increased 14% to 130,572 tons, while cargo capacity grew 15% to 1.25 billion available freight-tonne kilometers.

Cathay Pacific said flights to Rome would resume in June.

Subsidiary HK Express flew 667,079 passengers, up 46% year over year. It launched flights to Sendai, Japan, and will introduce routes to Nha Trang, Vietnam, and Ishigaki in Japan in April.

It also plans to introduce eight new routes within the year.
