United Airlines (UAL) said Tuesday the UAV Sustainable Flight Fund has invested in direct air capture firm, Heirloom, adding carbon reduction technology to its decarbonization strategies.

The Fund also secured the right to buy up to 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide removal, which will be used for sustainable aviation fuel production or stored underground, the company added.

Heirloom's technology uses limestone to capture carbon dioxide from the air, making it a low-cost method for removing carbon dioxide, the company said.

United shares were over 3% lower in recent trading.
