智通财经APP获悉，矿业巨头必和必拓(BHP.US)将在智利启动一项规模高达108亿美元的投资计划，对一家老旧的铜厂——Escondida工厂——进行改造。必和必拓周二表示，将很快进入耗资20多亿美元的工厂环境处理升级项目。
这家全球市值最高的矿业公司正在与矿石质量作斗争。虽然必和必拓未来十年在智利的整体投资计划并不是什么新鲜事，但对Escondida工厂的全面改造是该计划的第一步。
仅为保持必和必拓在智利的铜产量不下降所需的支出规模，就显示出在能源转型和数据中心热潮中要满足对铜日益增长的需求将是一项多么艰巨的任务。根据去年年底的一份报告，必和必拓在智利的项目还包括位于Escondida的一座全新工厂，该工厂的成本可能在44亿至59亿美元之间。这些项目将使必和必拓未来十年在智利的年均铜产量达到约140万吨，而如果不进行投资，这一数字将降至90万吨左右。
