The Tourism Authority of Thailand tapped Baidu (HKG:9888) unit Beijing Baidu Netcom Science Technology to promote the country as a safe travel destination, according to a Friday news release by the authority.

Baidu Netcom signed a letter of intent with the Tourism Authority of Thailand Thursday to promote the country's tourism using digital marketing tooks, AI-powered travel insights, and customized content, the report said.

The collaboration came about after news regarding Chinese actor Wang Xing's alleged abduction in the Thailand-Myanmar border went viral, according to a separate Bloomberg News report Friday.

The actor's abduction prompted last-minute cancellations of Lunar New Year trips to Thailand by mainland Chinese travellers, Bloomberg said.

Shares fell 5% during Friday's afternoon trading.
