Verizon Communications (VZ) and AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) have completed a trial live video call between a satellite-connected mobile device and another mobile device with Verizon's terrestrial network connection, according to a statement from Verizon Monday.
The demonstration followed the Federal Communications Commission's approval for AST to start testing the use of Verizon's spectrum in the US, allowing AST's first five commercial BlueBird satellites to test connections with smartphones, according to Verizon.
Verizon said the trial video call is a step towards its project with AST to build a satellite-to-device network with text, voice and live video calling capabilities.
