BMS Re adds Howden Re duo to London team

By Edward Carron

Feb 27 - (The Insurer) - BMS Re has added Jonathan Hughes and Martin Bartell to its London non-marine team, with both joining from Howden Re.

Hughes has been appointed managing director of non-marine reinsurance and Bartell as director of non-marine reinsurance.

Hughes and Bartell joined Howden through its acquisition of TigerRisk in 2023. They continued their roles through the subsequent rebrands, first to Howden Tiger and then to Howden Re.

Hughes has worked in the industry for more than three decades, spending seven years at TigerRisk/Howden Re, where he was promoted to managing director in 2024.

He previously held roles at Guy Carpenter, Axis and Aon.

Bartell also boasts three decades of reinsurance broking experience, with stints at Gallagher Re and Aon before a decade on the UK specialty and retro desk at TigerRisk/Howden Re.

BMS has bolstered its London team this year with the additions Genna Biddell as head of P&C reinsurance earlier this month and Richard Dudley as chief broking officer in January.

Redundancies in the broker’s U.S. reinsurance arm in January saw the departure of Russ McGuire and Daniel Bilot. In a statement to The Insurer, recently appointed divisional CEO Brad Melvin described the departures as “part of a considered realignment of our business strategy”.
