Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) YouTube has officially surpassed 1 billion monthly active podcast viewers, solidifying its position as the most frequently used platform for podcast listening in the U.S., the company announced Wednesday in a blog post.
YouTube is often the first place people go when looking for a new podcast," the company said, highlighting its powerful search and recommendation features that help users discover new content. Podcasts on YouTube and YouTube Music are available across multiple devices, including TVs.
YouTube has come a long way since its launch in December 2005, when video clips were limited to 100MB and 30 seconds. Less than a year later, Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion, paving the way for its evolution into the world's largest video streaming service.
Beyond entertainment, YouTube now supports news channels, livestreaming, and monetization for content creators. A recent Nielsen report found YouTube held the second-largest share of U.S. TV viewing in December at 11.1%, trailing only Disney (DIS). Time spent watching YouTube on TV increased 7% that month, reflecting its growing presence beyond mobile and desktop screens.
