Chinese auto giant Geely Auto (HKG: 0175) has unveiled the AI-powered G-Pilot smart driving system, as moves by BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY), and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) quickly shift the focus of competition in the electric vehicle (EV) sector to smart driving.

The automaker unveiled the new G-Pilot at an event yesterday, comprising five solutions -- G-Pilot H1, G-Pilot H3, G-Pilot H5, G-Pilot H7, and G-Pilot H9 -- similar to BYD's God's Eye smart driving system.

The hardware system of G-Pilot H1 includes 10 cameras and 5 millimeter-wave radars to support highway NOA (Navigate on Autopilot) and automatic parking assistance.

The hardware system of G-Pilot H3 includes 11 cameras and 3 millimeter-wave radars to support urban commuting NOA, highway NOA and automatic parking assistance.

The hardware system of G-Pilot H5 includes 11 cameras, 3 millimeter-wave radars and 1 LiDAR for full-scenario door-to-door NOA without HD maps.

The G-Pilot H7 has the same hardware system as the G-Pilot H5, but introduces more AI capabilities.

G-Pilot H9 is a solution for L3 autonomous driving with 13 cameras, 3 millimeter-wave radars and multiple LiDARs. It integrates an end-to-end model, a multimodal large language model, and will enable a full-scenario, door-to-door autonomous driving experience.

Here are Geely's own descriptions of the solutions:

The new G-Pilot technologies will come in five different levels meeting the differentiated requirements of a wide range of users.

Empowered by AI, G-Pilot will continue to evolve throughout the lifespan of the vehicles. Highway Navigation on Pilot (NOA) and Home Zone Park Assist (HPA) will become standard on all G-Pilot powered vehicles.

  • The basic G-Pilot H1 supports an evolving high-speed Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) and user settable memory parking functionality.
  • G-Pilot H3 supports urban intelligent driving and NOA.
  • G-Pilot H5 supports map free urban NOA and large model supported point to point intelligent driving.
  • G-Pilot H7 supports video large model (VLM), video language action models (VLA), and digital foresight capabilities as well as parking spot to parking spot intelligent driving. With localized video empowered AI Level 4 G-Pilot has the ability to evolve over time.
  • G-Pilot H9 supports the most cutting-edge intelligent driving technologies fully unleashing the power of VLM/VLA to create an intelligent chauffer that will act as a safety driver for the users. The hardware in vehicles with level 5 G-Pilot systems will be capable of achieving L3 intelligent driving in the future.

The G-Pilot will be available for models from brands including Geely Auto, , Lynk & Co, and Galaxy.

Geely is expected to begin a mass push of the pilot-assist feature from parking space to parking space this month.

The automaker launched the updated Galaxy E8 at the event, an mid-size all-electric sedan powered by the G-Pilot H1 solution with a starting price range of RMB 149,800 to RMB 198,800.

Geely Galaxy has been upgraded from a previous product lineup to a standalone brand, incorporating the Geely unit London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC).

Geely Galaxy's future new models, as well as facelifted models, will come with different levels of the G-Pilot package, Geely said.

Geely's launch of the G-Pilot comes at a time when BYD is bringing its smart driving system to affordable models and Tesla is bringing its FSD (Full Self-Driving) feature to China.

BYD unveiled the God's Eye on February 10, dividing the system into three branches: the God's Eye A, the God's Eye B, and the God's Eye C.

BYD announced updates to 21 models at the time that came with the God's Eye system for free.

On February 25, Tesla began pushing out software update version 2024.45.32.12 to eligible vehicles in China, bringing FSD-like smart driving capabilities.
