Energy company shares showed positive momentum despite a fall in oil and gas prices.
Oil and gas companies nearly all notched gains. EOG Resources, which reported fourth-quarter earnings Thursday evening, was an exception and ended in the red.
Oilfield-services providers such as Baker Hughes, Schlumberger, and Halliburton ended higher.
