Further weakness as Gallant Venture (SGX:5IG) drops 18% this week, taking one-year losses to 42%

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Gallant Venture Ltd. (SGX:5IG) share price has gained 10% in the last three months. But that is minimal compensation for the share price under-performance over the last year. In fact, the price has declined 42% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

Check out our latest analysis for Gallant Venture

Given that Gallant Venture didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last twelve months, Gallant Venture increased its revenue by 5.0%. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. Given this fairly low revenue growth (and lack of profits), it's not particularly surprising to see the stock down 42% in a year. It's important not to lose sight of the fact that profitless companies must grow. So remember, if you buy a profitless company then you risk being a profitless investor.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 25% in the last year, Gallant Venture shareholders lost 42%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 7% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Gallant Venture better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Gallant Venture (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
