Energy stocks fell Monday afternoon with the NYSE Energy Sector Index decreasing 2.1% and the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) dropping 2.7%.
The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector index slumped 3.4%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities index gained 0.1%.
West Texas Intermediate crude oil fell 2.3% to $68.17 a barrel while global benchmark Brent shed 2% to $71.34 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures jumped 5.6% to $4.05 per 1 million BTU.
In corporate news, Sunnova Energy International (NOVA) shares plunged 62% after the company issued a "going concern" notice as part of its earnings.
Shell (SHEL) is considering selling its chemical assets in Europe and the US, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. Shell shares fell 1.5%.
Genesis Energy (GEL) shares rose 3%. The company completed the sale of its soda ash business to an indirect affiliate of WE Soda for an implied enterprise value of $1.43 billion.
