Albertsons Chief Executive Vivek Sankaran is departing as part of a planned retirement, and will be succeeded by operating chief Susan Morris.

The Boise, Idaho-based grocery store chain on Monday said that Morris will take over the company's top job on May 1. At that time, Morris will also join the board of directors to replace Sankaran.

Sankaran has headed Albertsons since April 2019. The company recently abandoned its merger plans with Kroger after a judge blocked the $20 billion grocery deal.

Earlier on Monday, Kroger also announced the exit of its CEO. The company said that Rodney McMullen resigned from the company following a board investigation into his personal conduct, ending a more than four-decade career at the grocery chain.
