Rivian will allow some EV owners to upgrade their R1S or R1T to unlock more range and power through an upcoming software update. The update unlocks your vehicle’s full potential and even includes a new “Rally mode,” but it won’t be free.

Rivian OTA update coming soon for more range, power

After strong demand, Rivian will offer second-gen R1S SUV and R1T pickup owners its Performance upgrade through its upcoming 2025.06 software update.

Rivian’s head of software, Wassym Bensaid, confirmed the upgrade will be available soon through an OTA update.

As of right now, the upgrade is only available when configuring a new Dual Motor R1S or R1T, or if you buy one with it loaded from Rivian’s inventory.

For an extra $5,000, the Performance Upgrade boosts horsepower from 533 to 665 while increasing max torque from 610 to 829 lb-ft. You also get added Sport and Sand mode for better performance and control in different terrains. The added power is good for a 0 to 60 mph sprint time in 3.4 secs, down from 4.5 secs without the upgrade.

It looks like the update will also include a new Rally Mode, which Rivian says “softens damping to help reach higher speeds.” The Sport and Soft Sand modes are also still included.

Bensaid said the update is “coming soon,” but didn’t reveal prices. However, he did say you can use Rivian Rewards. Rivian’s software chief also confirmed a range-boosting update was “next on the roadmap” after responding to a user on X.

Like the Performance upgrade, the option unlocks the battery’s potential for added range. Again, no prices or official launch date were revealed, but the Max battery option is available for $7,000 when building a new R1S or R1T with an EPA-estimated range of up to 410 and 420 miles, respectively.

Rivian offers three battery options: Standard, Large, and Max. In the second-gen R1T and R1S, Standard offers up to 258 miles, while the Large provides up to 330 miles.

After cutting monthly lease prices by $200 in February, the R1S is now available at the same rate as the R1T starting at just $599 per month. It may even be a better deal than the new Tesla Model Y.
