1137 GMT - It's time for large European telecommunication companies to be allowed to consolidate and grow to create technological capacity, Telefonica Chief Executive Officer Marc Murtra says at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. European telecom companies should be allowed to operate in a less regulated environment, Murtra says. This can strengthen European strategic autonomy, unlock productivity and improve ordinary people's lives, he adds. "For this to happen companies will need to adapt, focus on what we know and work aptly." However, the European Commission, European Union member states and regulators also need to adapt, he adds.
