While most Republican senators defended Trump's tariff moves or shied away from questions on Monday, one GOP lawmaker still held out hope for a deal. "Let's see what happens," Sen. Josh Hawley (Mo.), a close Trump ally, said on Monday evening outside the Senate chamber. "If I recall there was an eleventh hour deal on this."

Hawley said he wasn't privy to any last-minute negotiations, but merely keeping an open mind on a deal due to "past experience." The prospects for a last-minute deal appeared to diminish on Monday night, however, after the Trump administration posted notices for new tariffs on Mexico and Canada in the Federal Register.
