TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) noted that Indonesia experienced monthly deflation again in February 2025. Deflation in February was recorded at 0.48 percent, primarily caused by the electricity tariff discount provided by the government in January-February 2025.
BPS Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti stated that the deflation in February was not as deep as in January 2025. "In February 2025, there was a 0.48 percent monthly deflation, or a decrease in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 105.99 in January 2025 to 105.48 in February 2025," said Amalia during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, March 3, 2025.
Looking at expenditure groups, the main contributors to monthly deflation were housing, water, electricity, and household fuel. This group's deflation recorded 3.59 percent and contributed to 0.52 percent of deflation. The dominant commodity driving deflation in this group, according to Amalia, was the electricity tariff discount, which contributed to a 0.67 percent deflation.
"The 50 percent electricity discount for PLN (State Electricity Company) customers with a power of under 2,200 VA was still in effect in February 2025," said Amalia. "Postpaid PLN customers began to feel the electricity tariff discount for customers under 2,200 VA, which was reflected in their bills starting from February 2025, as well as for bill payments in January 2025."
In addition, some commodities contributed to deflation due to decreasing prices of certain volatile foods. One of them was the price reduction of broiler chicken, which contributed to a deflation of 0.06 percent. Furthermore, shallots and red chili commodities also experienced price decreases throughout February. "Thus, they contributed to deflation, each by 0.05 percent and 0.04 percent," said Amalia.
Furthermore, Amalia explained that, looking at components, the deflation that occurred in February 2025 was mainly driven by the price components regulated by the government. The deflation rate in this component was 2.65 percent.
"This component contributed to a deflation of 0.48 percent, in which the dominant commodity contributing to deflation was the electricity tariff due to the ongoing electricity discount in February 2025," she said.
Meanwhile, the volatile price component also experienced 0.93 percent deflation and contributed to 0.16 percent deflation. The dominant commodities contributing to deflation were broiler chicken, shallots, red chili, bird's eye chili, tomatoes, and chicken eggs.
Meanwhile, the core component still experienced inflation of 0.25 percent and contributed to 0.16 percent of inflation. "The dominant commodities contributing to inflation in the core component were gold jewelry, powdered coffee, and cars," said Amalia.
