3月3日，据国外科技媒体消息，iPhone 17系列增加了Air型号，并取消了Plus型号。新增的iPhone 17 Air采用了超薄设计，是苹果历史上最薄的一款手机。
YouTube博主Jon Prosser爆料，iPhone 17 Air的厚度是5.64毫米，而分析师郭明𫓹认为iPhone 17 Air的厚度是5.5毫米。尽管二者提供的数据不同，但可以确定的是iPhone 17 Air的厚度在6毫米之内。
为了实现超薄设计，苹果不得不牺牲一些基础配置。据报道，iPhone 17 Air去除了底部扬声器，超广角摄像头和物理SIM卡插槽。
据报道，iPhone 17 Air只有一个扬声器，听筒位于顶部，麦克风则在底部开口处。不仅如此，苹果还删去了超广角摄像头，仅仅在背面留下一个4800万像素的主摄像头，该摄像头支持光学品质的2倍变焦。另外，iPhone 17 Air仅支持eSIM。不同于传统的物理SIM卡，eSIM能直接整合进设备的主板，并且能通过远程下载配置文件实现网络连接，其最大优势在于节省了设备的内部空间。
在工业设计方面，iPhone 17 Air采用了水平摄像头模组设计，后置摄像头造型类似一条跑道。这是苹果历史上变化最大的一款机型。
