Mama's Creations' (NASDAQ:MAMA) investors will be pleased with their fantastic 435% return over the last five years

The last three months have been tough on Mama's Creations, Inc. (NASDAQ:MAMA) shareholders, who have seen the share price decline a rather worrying 40%. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. In that time, the share price has soared some 435% higher! So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. But the real question is whether the business fundamentals can improve over the long term.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over half a decade, Mama's Creations managed to grow its earnings per share at 22% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 40% per year, over the same period. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 62.91.

We should note here that the five-year TSR is more impressive, at 40% per year. More recently, the share price growth has slowed.
