Canadian Auto Parts Makers Face 'Existential Threat' With Tariffs -- Market Talk

1316 ET - U.S. imposed tariffs threaten Canada's entire auto supply industry, CIBC analysts say, who downgrade Linamar and Martinrea International both to a neutral rating from outperformer. "While we appreciate that the auto suppliers are trading near multi-year lows, we view the tariffs by the U.S. as an existential threat to the industry," they say in a report. Prior to any tariff talk, the analysts already considered 2025 a "run-of-the-mill" challenging year, given lower production forecasts. Now there is significant uncertainty, the analyst say, for an industry "that has worked to integrate itself since the introduction of the Canada-US Automotive Products Agreement in 1965."
