Burlington Boosted by Trade Down from Higher-Income Shoppers -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

1244 ET - Burlington Stores got a big piece of its outsized sales growth in 4Q from middle- and upper-income customers trading down from more expensive outlets, CEO Michael O'Sullivan says on a call with analysts. Lower-income shoppers continued to be a driver of growth, but stores in moderate- and higher-income trade areas also delivered healthy comparable sales growth, and items Burlington sold during the quarter had a higher price on average than they did a year ago, he says. The strongest growth rates in 4Q were on sales of items in price buckets that were well above Burlington's average, the CEO says. (dean.seal@wsj.com)
