Meta Platforms (META) has begun testing its own microchip design for training artificial intelligence systems, a step in its effort to reduce dependence on other chipmakers, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.
The new chip, designed in collaboration with foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturer (TSMC) was made to process only AI-specific tasks, potentially making it more efficient than integrated graphics processing units produced by Nvidia (NVDA), the report said.
The company plans to increase production of the chips pending results of the testing, the report said.
Meta did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
