United Airlines CEO Still Only Sees Legroom for 2 Premium Airlines -- Market Talk

1047 ET - United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said 10 years ago that he thought there was space in the industry for only two premium airlines, and that apparently hasn't changed. "I still think there's only room for two," he says at the 2025 JPMorgan Industrials Conference. It comes down to the size of the market, Kirby says. New York is among a few metro areas big enough to even have two top airlines, and it's hard to be number three in that fight, he says, seeming to swipe at American Airlines given Delta Air Line's prominence in the Big Apple. "You can be really big in a place that's not New York or Chicago or Los Angeles, but it's hard to be kind of global and comprehensive if you can't be number one in those big cities," Kirby says.
