Jiangsu Expressway (HKG:177) Will Want To Turn Around Its Return Trends

Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Jiangsu Expressway (HKG:177) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Jiangsu Expressway:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.073 = CN¥5.2b ÷ (CN¥84b - CN¥13b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

So, Jiangsu Expressway has an ROCE of 7.3%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 4.9% generated by the Infrastructure industry, it's much better.

What Can We Tell From Jiangsu Expressway's ROCE Trend?

In terms of Jiangsu Expressway's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 7.3% from 12% five years ago. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.

Our Take On Jiangsu Expressway's ROCE

Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Jiangsu Expressway. Furthermore the stock has climbed 58% over the last five years, it would appear that investors are upbeat about the future. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.
