- The first Megapacks made in Shanghai set sail today for export to Australia.
- A single Megapack can store about 3,900 kWh of electricity, equivalent to the battery capacity of 62 Model 3 rear-wheel drive cars.
Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) China team shipped the first energy storage products, the Megapacks, produced at the Shanghai Megafactory overseas, after the factory started production last month.
"The first batch of Shanghai-made Tesla Megapacks, Tesla's ultra-large commercial electrochemical energy storage systems, set sail today," Tesla wrote on Weibo.
A single Megapack can store about 3,900 kWh of electricity, equivalent to the battery capacity of 62 Model 3 rear-wheel drive cars, Tesla said.
The Megapack uses the same technology as Tesla vehicles, the US company said, adding that it not only has a car business, but also a parallel energy storage business.
Tesla did not mention more details, including the destination of the first Megapack products.
The Shanghai Megafactory officially started production on February 11, when Tesla's vice president of external affairs Grace Tao said on Weibo that the first Megapacks made in China had rolled off the production line and would be exported to Australia.
Tesla started construction of the Shanghai Megafactory on May 23, 2024, its first energy storage project outside the US.
The factory is located in the Lingang area of Pudong, Shanghai, which is also the location of Tesla's EV factory in China, where the Model 3 and Model Y are produced.
Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group was the first Chinese customer of the Megapack produced in this factory, and signed the first order with Tesla at the groundbreaking ceremony last May.
Tesla's energy storage products include Powerwall, Powerpack and Megapack. The Shanghai Megafactory mainly produces the Megapack, a large-scale commercial energy storage battery, for the global market.
The Megafactory's annual production capacity of Megapacks would be as high as 10,000 units, with an energy storage capacity of nearly 40 GWh, Tesla previously said.
The Megapack is a powerful battery that can store energy and supply energy, helping to stabilize the power grid and prevent power outages. A total of 40 GWh of electricity is enough for 50,000 households in Shanghai to use for a year.
