Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Eyes $300 Billion Valuation in SoftBank-Led $40 Billion Deal

March 27 - OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT backed by Microsoft (MSFT, Financial), is on track to secure about $40 billion in fresh funding, with SoftBank leading the investment, according to Bloomberg report on Thursday.

The financing will occur in two stages. In the first phase, SoftBank is expected to contribute $7.5 billion, while other backers will add $2.5 billion. A second tranche, anticipated later in 2025, could raise an additional $30 billion, with SoftBank providing $22.5 billion and other investors supplying $7.5 billion.

If finalized, the deal would mark one of the largest private fundraising rounds ever recorded.

The round will also include investments from Magnetar Capital, Coatue Management, Founders Fund, and Altimeter Capital. Magnetar is reportedly weighing a $1 billion commitment,

OpenAI has projected its annual revenue could exceed $12.7 billion in 2025, up from $3.7 billion expected this year. By 2026, the figure could climb to $29.4 billion.
