BlockBeats News, March 27th, Ethereum developers @linoscope and @JustinDrake jointly drafted EIP-7917 (Deterministic proposer lookahead), aiming to thoroughly address the existing uncertainty issue in proposer election. In the current Ethereum consensus, the system selects a proposer for a slot from the entire active validator set using a random sampling algorithm based on a random number (e.g., RANDAO) and Effective Balance weighting. Although the RANDAO seed can be obtained in advance, the fluctuation of validator effective balances within an epoch makes it difficult to predict the proposers for the next epoch, posing risks to on-chain applications relying on the pre-commitment protocol.
EIP-7917 solves the uncertainty issue in the existing proposer arrangement caused by the dynamic changes in validator effective balances by precomputing and storing a deterministic proposer list at the beginning of each epoch. This not only enhances the system's security, preventing validator manipulation but also simplifies on-chain protocol implementation while maintaining backward compatibility and scalability.
