Utilities stocks advanced 1.06% at midday Thursday. Brent crude futures settled up 1.05% at $73.79 per barrel.

Contact Energy (ASX:CEN, NZE:CEN) said it intends to appeal the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority panel's decision to decline consent for its Southland Wind Farm project and to reapply for approval under a fast-track consenting process.

On the flip side, the information technology sector plunged, shedding 2%. US President Donald Trump announced 25% tariffs on imported cars and light trucks, with collections starting April 3. U.S. equity index futures slid in after-hours trading.
