Possible Bearish Signals With McDonald's Insiders Disposing Stock

Many McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At McDonald's

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chairman President, Christopher Kempczinski, sold US$5.5m worth of shares at a price of US$300 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$307). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 30% of Christopher Kempczinski's holding.

McDonald's insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

McDonald's Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of McDonald's shares. Specifically, insiders ditched US$5.7m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. McDonald's insiders own 0.06% of the company, currently worth about US$131m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
