Uber Teams Up With WeRide To Bring Self-Driving Cars To Dubai

02 Apr

Uber Technologies, Inc (NYSE:UBER) and WeRide, Inc (NASDAQ:WRD) announced a partnership with Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA).

The partnership aims to help Uber make autonomous vehicles an accessible and reliable part of everyday life in Dubai, beginning with WeRide as the first technology partner.

RTA Director General and Board Chair Mattar Al Tayer mentioned the partnership represents a crucial step in advancing Dubai’s Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to transform 25% of all journeys in the city into autonomous trips across various transport modes by 2030.

Uber and RTA will collaborate on pilot programs, leveraging Uber’s technology to match riders with AVs while ensuring a seamless and user-friendly experience. The partnership will also explore data insights, safety protocols, and regulatory frameworks to support a smooth transition to autonomous mobility in Dubai.

WeRide became the first AV provider to secure the UAE’s national license for self-driving vehicles in July 2023. The Dubai launch follows the WeRide AVs commercial launch in Abu Dhabi on Uber in December 2024.

The global autonomous driving market could grow at an 80% compound annual growth rate from $93 billion in 2025 to $1.745 trillion by 2030. The market has a growth potential of 85% CAGR for China, reaching $639 billion by 2030.

President Donald Trump’s positive stance on autonomous vehicles posed a breather for companies indulging in the sector after getting hit by the 2020 pandemic.

Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) chief Elon Musk expects the EV giant’s robotaxi fleet to function like a combination of Airbnb, Inc (NASDAQ:ABNB) and Uber.

The Future Fund’s Gary Black expects vehicle owners to make $40000 annually by renting EVs to the robotaxi fleet.

Price Actions: At the last check on Wednesday, UBER stock was down 0.88% to $72.34 in the premarket session, while WRD was down 0.87%.
