Latest Tankan May Not Reflect Automakers Sentiment Accurately -- Market Talk

0104 GMT - The Bank of Japan's tankan corporate survey released Tuesday shows the diffusion index measuring sentiment among big automakers rose to +13 in March from +8 in December, but it doesn't mean that they think the negative effects of President Trump's tariffs are small. Most companies had already submitted their response to the BOJ by the time Trump announced an additional 25% auto tariff last week, a BOJ official said. The March tankan shows the index measuring large automakers' sentiment in three months ahead stood at +9. That could deteriorate more deeply in the next June survey if the additional duty on cars goes into effect as planned. (megumi.fujikawa@wsj.com)
