Cambodia joined other Asian countries in seeking to convince President Trump to lift the tariffs through negotiations.

Earlier this week, the U.S. imposed a 49% levy on Cambodia, which is among the Asian nations that have become a major manufacturing base for U.S. shoemakers. A number of them, including Nike, had moved production out of China to Southeast Asia in recent years.

On Friday, Cambodia's commerce ministry published a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, offering to slash tariffs on 19 categories of imported U.S. goods from a maximum levy of 35% to 5%. In return, the ministry asked Greer to open talks to find solutions that "that uphold both the U.S. economic interests and Cambodia's sustainable development."
