宣武门附近有一条小胡同叫芝麻街，街如其名，胡同很短小，只有三座院落，但清朝时曾名流云集。

1号院据说曾是近代著名翻译家林琴南先生的宅院，林先生虽然不懂外文，但是他跟留学归国人士合作，翻译了《巴黎茶花女遗事》等170多部外国文学著作。

在清嘉庆、道光年间，胡同里还有一个宣南诗社，起初叫消寒诗社，很多名人都来此消寒、赏菊、忆梅、试茶、观摩古董等，有陶澍、林则徐、龚自珍、魏源等人。道光十八年（1838年）十一月，林则徐在被任命为钦差大臣前后，还参加了诗社的活动。在赴广东查办鸦片前，龚自珍写了著名的《送钦差大臣侯官林公序》，勉励林则徐到广东后要坚决禁止鸦片。
