China Curbs U.S. Film Imports in Response to Trump Tariffs -- Market Talk

1115 ET - China's film regulator has reportedly said it will "moderately reduce" the number of U.S. films that can be imported into the country, part of its targeting of the American services sector in an escalating trade war, Benchmark analyst Mike Hickey says in a research note. China stopped short of a full ban, but the restrictions signal risks for U.S. service exports like intellectual property royalties and travel, the analyst says. The number of Hollywood films released in China peaked at 63 in 2018 but fell to 42 last year as regulators prioritize homegrown content and domestic Chinese films took a bigger slice of the box office there, the analyst says. Disney shares fall 6.1%, Warner Bros. Discovery shares sink 12% and Paramount Global shares slips 1.2%. (dean.seal@wsj.com)
