Japan Orders Google to Stop Anticompetitive Smartphone App Practices

The Japan Fair Trade Commission has directed Google to halt its practice of forcing smartphone manufacturers to preinstall its search and browser apps, according to a notice on Tuesday.

The antitrust regulator said such a requirement violates competition laws, and that Google's dominance in the search market unfairly restricts competition.

This follows the commission's investigation and collaboration that was initiated on Oct. 23, 2023. In the process, the regulator collaborated with foreign competition authorities who were also examining similar conduct by Google.
