Electronics Tariff Delay Seen Opening Door to Negotiation -- Market Talk

1110 ET - The Trump administration's delay on electronics tariffs leaves more space for negotiation, opening the door to potentially better policies for semiconductor buyers like Apple, Bank of America analysts say in a research note. The analysts say the administration appears more focused on boosting U.S. self-sufficiency in semiconductor production than merely closing persistent trade gaps, meaning that to-be-announced sectoral tariffs could be aimed at U.S. electronics assembled in China that also use chips manufactured overseas. Such tariffs could give consideration to recent announcements on U.S. investments from the likes of TSMC, Apple and Nvidia, the analysts say. "Overall, we expect the 1-2 month comment period to provide room for negotiations that can hopefully reduce the tariff burden on the chip sector," the analysts say. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
