Meta Platforms (META) Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg considered spinning off Instagram in 2018, according to an email presented during the antitrust trial against the tech giant, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday.
The email was introduced on the second day Zuckerberg faced questions in the Federal Trade Commission's antitrust trial against Meta, which could force the company to divest Instagram and WhatsApp.
"I'm beginning to wonder whether spinning Instagram out is the only structure that will accomplish a number of important goals," Zuckerberg wrote in the email, according to the reports. "As calls to break up the big tech companies grow, there is a non-trivial chance that we will be forced to spin out Instagram and perhaps WhatsApp in the next 5-10 years anyway."
Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
